Obama family chili with rice recipe

President Obama has been known to brag about his family’s recipe for chili for years. And while it is a respectable recipe, it’s a very, very Midwestern one. I’m sure this would be a potluck killer in Illinois or Ohio, but it would be a fairly bland one to any chili-lover worth their comino, and it’s outright offensive to most Texans (who are crazy serious about chili).

Admittedly, offending Southerners is already an almost inevitable outcome for Obama, but politics aside, Sam fracking Houston could come back from the dead, quarterback the Dallas Cowboys to a Superbowl victory at the Alamo and make this the new official chili of the New Republic of Texas and it would STILL be met with scorn and derision. It almost doesn’t need to be said, but a mild, no-alarm chili made with beans, red wine vinegar and served on white rice just doesn’t have any shot at all of meeting the strict standards and high expectations of the South.

Still, this a very good Midwestern chili, a straightforward recipe well worth making some random Tuesday. It may not be a competition-level recipe, in any state, but it doesn’t need to be. A chili doesn’t have to epitomize the southern style to be creative and flavorful in it’s own right — but it helps! — and should have a place in your repertoire.

Yields4 Servings

Former president Obama's family recipe for a hearty and healthy chili made with turkey, fresh tomatoes and served on rice.

Prep Time15 minsCook Time30 minsTotal Time45 mins

Ingredients

1 white onion, roughly chopped (divided)
1 green bell pepper, roughly chopped
 4 cloves garlic, finely chopped
 1 tablespoons olive oil
 1 pound lean ground beef
 1 tablespoon chili powder
 ¼ teaspoon cumin
 ¼ teaspoon oregano
 ¼ teaspoon turmeric
 ¼ teaspoon basil
 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar
 6 tomatoes, roughly chopped
1 (15-ounce) can kidney beans, drained and rinsed
 1 cup white rice
 cheddar cheese, shredded (for garnish)
 sour cream (for garnish)

Instructions

1

Sauté the onions, peppers and garlic
In a medium pan over medium heat, cook the onions, peppers and garlic in the olive oil until the vegetables become soft and pliable (about 5-7 minutes). Reserve about 2 tablespoons of raw onions for garnish.

2

Cook the ground beef
In a pan over medium-high heat, add the ground turkey and cook until the ground beef has browned and is cooked through completely (about 7-10 minutes). Use a spatula to break up the ground beef into uniform pieces to ensure all the beef cooks evenly.

3

Finish the chili
Mix the chili powder, cumin, oregano, turmeric and basil together and stir into the meat mixture. Add the red wine vinegar and tomatoes, breaking up the tomatoes with a potato masher. Simmer the chili over low to medium heat until it cooks down a bit and add the kidney beans. Cover and cook for 15 minutes more and serve over white rice cooked according to package instructions. Garnish with cheese, onions and sour cream.

Notes

For an even healthier former First Lady-approved version, substitute brown rice which is rich in selenium, manganese, anti-oxidants and fiber.
