Peanut Butter and Nutella Rice Krispies Treats Recipe
Ferrero says their signature chocolate-hazlenut spread is “the revolutionary invention of the century”. Nutella is damn delicious but that seems like a pretty big statement for such a little jar. On the other hand, there is a World Nutella Day (for those with a dream and a spoon) and they are selling it almost as fast as they can make it, about a jar every 2.5 seconds — mostly to my niece, but still. For a makeshift spread invented in the backroom of a small pastry shop*, Nutella has certainly grown to become a global phenomenon but perhaps not to the hyperbolic heights of its inventor.
While Europeans seem to enjoy their Nutella in crêpes, tartines, or pain de mie, I like to open a jar for what has to be one of the most singularly American things you can make in your kitchen — peanut-butter Rice Krispies Treats. I mean in what other country would you make a classic snack recipe by combining peanut butter being sold by a magical boy who flies with fairies and crispy rice cereal being pitched to you by three elves? (Okay, maybe Iceland where they build tiny churches to convert the Huldufólk to Christianity. Which may seem strange to us, but ask yourselves why our food manufacturers are trying to convince us that the “hidden people” make all of our crackers, cookies and cereal? )
But sweeping Elven grocery mysteries aside for the moment, these peanut butter and Nutella Rice Krispies Treats are pretty amazing. They may be bit over-the-top but they’re completely worth every bite. Creamy, but still chewy, sweet and nutty, these irresistible chocolate and peanut butter treats combine many of the best things from several recipes. Don’t settle for Nutella spread on a slice of bread, have it between two layers of peanut butter Rice Krispies Treats for a guilty pleasure and make your little elves happy (maybe even some real elves too).
* After World War II, chocolate had become very expensive and relatively scarce. Nutella’s creator Pietro Ferrero, baked his new creation into a loaf of bread, wrapped it in tinfoil and sold it to local mothers, who served up slices of the chocolate loaf to their children, who immediately discarded the bread and ate the chocolate. Jarred Nutella was born. It soon became so popular that bakeries began offering smears of Nutella to kids who brought in a slice of bread in a marketing event known as “The Smearing” — which somehow was not an M. Night Shyamalan movie. Very disappointing.

Peanut Butter and Nutella Rice Krispies Treats recipe
Creamy, but still chewy, sweet and nutty, these irresistible chocolate and peanut butter treats combine many of the best things from several recipes
Ingredients
Instructions
Melt the butter
In a medium sauce pan over low heat, bring 1 cup of water to a simmer. Place a glass mixing bowl directly on top of the sauce pan. The bowl should fit snugly onto the saucepan and shouldn't leave any large gaps for steam to escape because it is too small or balance dangerously on your stove because it is too large. Melt the butter in the glass mixing bowl.
Stir in the marshmallows and peanut butter
Stir in the marshmallows until they are also completely melted and blended with the butter. Stir in the vanilla extract and add the peanut butter until all the ingredients are completely combined. Remove the mixture from the heat.
Add the Rice Krispies
Transfer the marshmallow and peanut butter mixture to a large mixing bowl with a spatula. Stirring slowly, add in the Rice Krispies until the cereal is thoroughly coated in the mixture.
Make the Rice Krispies treats
In a 9-by-13-inch pan, press 1/2 the Rice Krispies mixture evenly into a pan lined with wax paper (or grease the pan using cooking spray). Spread the Nutella evenly onto the first layer of Rice Krispies, leaving a 1/4-inch space at the edges to allow for spreading. Press in the remaining Rice Krispies mixture and let the treats cool completely.
Add the chocolate topping
Clean and dry the glass bowl from steps 1 and 2, and place back onto the sauce pan (add more water to the saucepan if necessary). Melt the chocolate chips and spread the chocolate evenly over the Rice Krispies treats with a spatula. Let the treats cool for 15 minutes before serving.
Notes
Be sure to use fresh marshmallows and real butter or stick margarine for the best results. Keep these on the counter in airtight container for 2 to 3 days or save them in the freezer for up to 6 weeks (separated by sheets of wax paper).
