Creamy, but still chewy, sweet and nutty, these irresistible chocolate and peanut butter treats combine many of the best things from several recipes
Melt the butter
In a medium sauce pan over low heat, bring 1 cup of water to a simmer. Place a glass mixing bowl directly on top of the sauce pan. The bowl should fit snugly onto the saucepan and shouldn't leave any large gaps for steam to escape because it is too small or balance dangerously on your stove because it is too large. Melt the butter in the glass mixing bowl.
Stir in the marshmallows and peanut butter
Stir in the marshmallows until they are also completely melted and blended with the butter. Stir in the vanilla extract and add the peanut butter until all the ingredients are completely combined. Remove the mixture from the heat.
Add the Rice Krispies
Transfer the marshmallow and peanut butter mixture to a large mixing bowl with a spatula. Stirring slowly, add in the Rice Krispies until the cereal is thoroughly coated in the mixture.
Make the Rice Krispies treats
In a 9-by-13-inch pan, press 1/2 the Rice Krispies mixture evenly into a pan lined with wax paper (or grease the pan using cooking spray). Spread the Nutella evenly onto the first layer of Rice Krispies, leaving a 1/4-inch space at the edges to allow for spreading. Press in the remaining Rice Krispies mixture and let the treats cool completely.
Add the chocolate topping
Clean and dry the glass bowl from steps 1 and 2, and place back onto the sauce pan (add more water to the saucepan if necessary). Melt the chocolate chips and spread the chocolate evenly over the Rice Krispies treats with a spatula. Let the treats cool for 15 minutes before serving.
